DANIA BEACH, Florida — As reported by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel: “January at Dania Jai-Alai, February at Mardi Gras and March at the Hard Rock: The High Heels Poker Tour is digging in its, well, heels, in South Florida.

“The poker endeavor, which is only for women, is expanding this year with a teaching academy and other ventures, said founder Lauren Failla, of Hollywood.

“‘It’s about opportunities and recognition,’ she said.

“The first of those opportunities is Saturday, with a tournament at Dania Jai-Alai. Buy-in is $100.

“Failla has organized 25 tournaments in the past 14 months, which draw 50 to 100 players. While there are other larger tournaments across South Florida, it’s pretty good when you consider that women comprise only 10 to 15 percent of the poker market.

“Kansas enacted a law for the first state-owned casinos in the U.S. in April, 2007, betting that $200 million could be raised annually for debt reduction, capital improvements and property tax relief.

“Now nearly two years later, private casino developers such as Penn National Gaming, LLC, and International Speedway Corp have dropped their plans for three out of the four casino sites, citing ailing economic conditions world wide…”
